Building code lookup

Ask intelligent building-code questions across 50 states with jurisdiction, adopted code books, uploaded sources, citations, and history kept in the same workspace.

Does an R-2 need a second exit if common path is within code limits?
Short Answer

Not from common path alone. If the R-2 space stays within the Table 1006.2.1 occupant-load and common-path limits, that space can be served by one exit access doorway. A story with one exit still has to qualify separately under Section 1006.3.4.

  • Check the space against Table 1006.2.1.
  • Check the story against the single-exit limits in 1006.3.4.
  • Confirm local amendments before treating the result as permit-ready.

Code analysis sheets

Turn a project premise into a structured code-information sheet for occupancy, egress, accessibility, references, warnings, and unresolved local requirements.
